Remembering Dr. Neil Joebschen: A Founding Force in Tri-City's Emergency Care

In remembrance, there is gratitude.

The Tri-City Hospital Foundation, alongside Tri-City Medical Center, is grateful to honor and celebrate the life of Dr. Neil Joebschen.

Dr. Joebschen was a legendary figure at Tri-City, serving for 38 years as one of the first full-time Emergency Room physicians.

Dr. Neil Joebschen began his medical career while serving in the U.S. Navy at Camp Pendleton. In 1969, during his service, he met fellow physician, and future medical partner, Dr. John Bushong. Following his discharge, Dr. Joebschen recognized an opportunity within Tri-City Medical Center’s Emergency Room, which at the time was staffed by part-time physicians.

That all changed on September 15, 1973, when, through Dr. Joebschen’s vision of full-time, on-site care, Tri-City awarded a contract to him, Dr. Bushong, and two additional physicians. From that moment, the Emergency Department as we know it today was born. Before long, Dr. Joebschen, Dr. Bushong, and their colleagues became known as “those boys in the ER.”

Over the course of his 38-year career, Dr. Joebschen saw the remarkable growth in the Emergency Department from 10 beds and 700 patients per month in 1973 to 47 beds and 6,000 patients per month by 2012.

During his tenure at Tri-City, Dr. Joebschen served in many leadership roles, including being the first Director of Emergency Room Physicians, Chief of Staff, and, in 2006, President and Chairman of the Tri-City Hospital Foundation.

Under his presidency, Dr. Joebschen oversaw the
