In Case of Emergency
Tri-City Medical Center's Emergency Department

The second busiest Emergency Department in the County of San Diego, Tri-City Medical Center’s ED sees an average of 65,000 patients a year. As the only hospital in North County that wasn’t directly threatened by the recent fires Tri-City expanded it’s emergency resources seeing almost double the usual number of patients during the first few days of the disaster.

Dr. Cary Mells, Director of the Emergency Department, was very proud of the ED staff “The dedication of the physicians, nurses and staff is really what stands out in my mind,” said Dr. Mells. “It was incredible to see the staff, many of them evacuated from their own homes, putting the community’s needs ahead of their own. “

The tremendous efforts of the Emergency Department staff are indicative of the quality of healthcare they provide on an ongoing basis. With over 250 years of combined experience, the Emergency Department physicians, all board certified, have made tremendous strides in improving the quality and efficiency of emergency healthcare in North County.

Recent changes in the triage process have significantly reduced door to doctor times, and overall patient turn around times. Improvements have been made in the Radiology Department so that within minutes after performing a procedure, results are transmitted and available to the physicians electronically. Cutting edge technology is also used to document medical records, allowing the physicians to spend more time face to face with patients.

A new program designed to assist in reducing response times for heart attack patients, allows every emergency medical response vehicle in Oceanside, Carlsbad and Vista to be equipped with technology that can detect a heart attack and wirelessly transmit that information to hospital, thus significantly reducing the time to diagnosis and treatment. The wireless transmittal equipment was funded by a grant from the generous donors of the Tri-City Hospital Foundation.

As if all this weren’t enough, Tri-City Medical Center was recently honored as a Joint Commission Primary Stroke Center, meaning they’re one of only five hospitals in San Diego County that have met or exceeded stroke care standards. By receiving definitive care within the first few hours of the onset of stroke symptoms, a patient’s long-term prognosis is significantly improved.

hTri-City Emergency Medical Group continues to be a leader in emergency care for our community. And if you think this is good news for the physicians, it’s even better news to the residents of North County.
