Cardiovascular Services at Tri-City Medical Center The Heart Center at Tri-City Medical Center has served the population of North San Diego County for 40 years. Twenty-four hours a day, Tri-City’s team of expertspecialists are standing by to meet the needs of our community’s heart patients. From the initial onset of symptoms through interventions, recovery, and rehabilitation we provide a full service line for our patients. These services do not always begin in the emergency room. Tri-City offers a complete line of diagnostic services and palliative interventions in addition to perfor-ming more than 150 open-heart surgeries per year. A typical patient may come to the emergency room complaining of chest pain, activating our cardiovascular team. The patient is stabilized with medication, an electrocardiogram and lab work are preformed, the cardiologist is consulted and the cardiac cath lab team is called—all within 30 minutes of the patients arrival. Once in the cath lab, the patient is treated by a team of trained specialists, utilizing state of the art equipment to identify any blockages in the blood vessels of the heart that could be the cause of the pain. Often at this stage of treatment the blockage can be re-opened by medication and a procedure to open the narrowed blood vessel called percutaneous coronary intervention. The patient is then stabilized and admitted over night for observation. In addition to this “heart muscle saving” intervention, our cardiology department performs many other diagnostic functions. In the month of January alone, the staff performed nearly 3,000 ECG’s, 120 Thallium Treadmills, 300 echocardiograms and inserted 15 pacemakers.
Completing the process of care for our patients in the beautiful and state-of-the-art Cardiac Wellness Center that is home to cardiac rehabilitation services. The facility, now located on the Tri-City Medical Center campus, was initially founded in 1984 at the former Oceanside “Tri City Hospital West” location. The Wellness Center now serves more than 300 patients per year in various phases of the program. Patients visiting the center range from those who have recently had open-heart surgery, heart attacks or interventions to those taking part in preventative measures. The current facility opened in 2002 and was made possible through the generous support of the community to the Tri-City Hospital Foundation.
