Dr. Steven L. Guber - A Man of Courage and Commitment

Dr. Steven L. Guber, a former staff surgeon at Tri-City Medical Center, has recently donated a significant gift to Tri-City Hospital Foundation to begin a scholarship fund for Operating Room Nursing and Staff Education.

“I worked with incredibly good nurses and technicians in the operating room for over 20 years. Without them, we couldn’t save the lives we did,” said Dr. Guber. “The scholarship fund is a tribute to these wonderful people who are dedicated to healing and touching lives. I’ve always been a believer in education and its importance in making sure that patients get the best possible care.” Dr. Guber hopes he will inspire others to also contribute to the fund.

Dr. Guber is a graduate of Northwestern Medical School. When he was an assistant professor of surgery at UCSD, he helped start the Life Flight program and provided continuing education for U.S. Embassy nurses. After the American College of Surgeons developed the Advanced Trauma Life Support Course (ATLS), Dr. Guber provided the course to embassy nurses in Beirut, Munich, and Honolulu. This began a lifelong love of travel.

Thus far, Dr. Guber has visited 150 countries on every continent. He has traveled to Antarctica five times and is especially fascinated by its resident penguins. “They are just so human and dedicated to each other,” he says.

A former runner and long-distance bicycler, Dr. Guber suffered a severe bicycling accident in July 2001 and is undergoing continuing physical therapy. Although his activities are currently limited, Dr. Guber has future plans to travel and work again. He speaks of wanting to “give back”—of a desire to help indigent patients and working as a medical volunteer in a free clinic—of a desire to enrich the lives of other persons with disabilities through developing a travel agency for disabled persons.

As for personal dreams, Dr. Guber is hoping to be swimming with the dolphins in Puerto Vallarta in the near future. Dr. Guber is indeed a man of great courage, commitment, and generosity.
